The World of Insects

Even in the remotest of times and nations, the efforts of wise men to set down their knowledge in books have never ceased. They have done so in order to leave their wisdom to those who came after. Thus survived unextinguished the search for truth. And thus not in vain did they toil to discover the secrets of science and to light what lies in shadow.  One Man who discovers a novelty unknown before him bequeaths it to those who come after him. (Al-Khwarizmi, Hindu mathematician, VII AD)

Edito, Monday 30/05/00

I am creating pages on the reproduction of insects: currently available in French. Gonepteryx rhamni - (c) 1999 - Panchout F.I have also added a French language site on butterflies featuring photos of different stages of development, from egg to adult.

With the prize won (a Web Cam) in the Nets d'Or competition organized by France Telecom, I am planning over the course of the year to add some pages on the habits of insects. A translation - achieved by Kelly Lyons - into English of the site will be emerging over the course of the year. With spring coming on apace, the site will soon offer much more information on these marvelous creatures.

As always and more than ever, if any of you would like to help, I would accept your collaboration with the greatest pleasure.

The only purpose of this site is to help discover –or rather survey- the too poorly understood world of insects. After all, felines -which number only a few dozen different species- are the subject of countless documentaries; while insects, their species estimated in the millions, have only a handful of sites (run a search and see..)! If we judge by their numbers, these creatures are truly the masters of the Earth. For each human there are several tens of million individuals!  So take a look at Goliath, named for its imposing size, at Lucanidae with mandibles like antlers, perfect for a science fiction movie; at the Lepidoptera with gorgeous colors like the Ornithoptera or the Morpho… Ramble and enjoy your visit!
